The successful and popular operatic tenor is still regarded as having been one of the greatest Mozartian tenors of the century as well as being an exponent of light operetta. His musical collaborations with Franz LŽhar, who wrote many pieces especially for him, are still reissued for new generations of fans. Roye's friendship with Tauber and his girlfriend Diana Napier came to an end when Tauber leased Roye's house in Elstree. Tauber painted many of the walls and floors a bright shade of Austrian blue and flatly refused to put right the damage.
